4 tips for guiding your customers to get their ring size right

I know from first hand the frustration you feel when you receive an email from a customer saying:
"I received my ring today, I love it, but it is too small or it is too big ....."
Sizing rings can be a tricky business – especially when working across the internet..
In this post I will share with you my 4 top tips for guiding your customers to give you the perfect ring sizing:
1. Firstly, there are lots of different ring measuring systems depending on where you live. Thankfully, there are handy charts online that allow jewellers like myself to convert from one system to another;
Tip: make sure you know which chart your customer is using and then, check carefully if the conversion chart you're using is correct.
2.We have our tools, manufactured from different places all over the world. Sometimes, this can mean that one jeweller’s tools are slightly different from another’s. It's for this reason that I recommend to my online customers to get sized from two different local jewellers. If the result is the same, they most propably have the right size.
3. Size differs depending on the width of the ring. Ask your customers to measure their finger at their local jewellers with a thin sizing band. You should consider that while you creating the ring.
4. Give clear instructions to your customers how and when to measure their finger. If you like, feel free to copy and paste the following on your website:
Your ring should fit your finger comfortably; snug enough so that it will not fall off, but loose enough to slide over your knuckle. Measure finger size 3 to 4 times to eliminate an erroneous reading.
Finger size changes depending on the time of day and the weather. For best results measure your finger size at the end of the day and when your fingers are warm. (Fingers are smaller in the early morning and when it is cold.)
Be aware that the sizes on the two hands can vary a lot. The 'good' hand may be bigger than the other one, so make sure to measure the actual finger where you plan to wear the ring.
Ring size is never perfect 100% of the time, because we don’t have metal or solid, never-changing fingers. On the contrary, our fingers are malleable flesh, and they can shrink and swell depending on the weather, the temperature, our activities on a day and even what we eat or drink. Not to mention when we gain or lose a few kilos.
So, with all that in mind… isn’t it an amazing thing when you're making a ring and fits perfectly?
